My Background

My journey began with five years in the Irish Guards, serving in Belize, Berlin, and Northern Ireland. That experience shaped my understanding of discipline, resilience, and operating under pressure.

After leaving the Army, I moved into the financial services industry, primarily in private banking. This led to 18 years living and working in Switzerland, where I worked with highly successful individuals across a range of industries.

What I Learned

During that time, I saw something important.

Success, wealth, and outward achievement do not always lead to fulfilment or clarity.

I met individuals who had achieved a great deal, yet still felt stuck, uncertain, or dissatisfied.

Personally, I have experienced both making and losing money, and like most people, I have made mistakes. I always tried to learn from them but, looking back, there were times when having someone objective to speak to would have made a significant difference.

Why Coaching

Coaching is unlocking people’s potential to maximise their own performance.

It provides the space many men never give themselves; the opportunity to think clearly, reflect honestly, and take action with purpose.

I understand how difficult it can be to ask for help, particularly outside of family or close friends. But the right conversation, at the right time, can change everything.

Where I Am Now

While I remain involved in finance, this has become my real focus.Uplands Coaching is built on a genuine desire to help others navigate their challenges more effectively avoiding some of the mistakes I made and moving forward with greater clarity.

I am married with two sons in their twenties, and I understand first-hand the responsibilities and pressures that come with different stages of life.

The Idea Behind “Uplands”

The name Uplands Coaching is inspired from Churchill’s 1940 speech, often referred to as

"Their Finest Hour."

At a time when the outcome of the Second World War was uncertain, he spoke about how future generations would look back and say that this was their finest hour, not because it was easy, but because of how people responded to it.

He held a clear belief that, despite the difficulty, the country could come through it and reach what he described as the “sunlit uplands.”And ultimately, that is exactly what happened.

That idea matters because the same principle applies on an individual level. Difficult periods do not define you, but how you respond to them does. With clarity, resilience, and the right support, it is possible to move through challenges and come out stronger on the other side.

The Meaning Behind the Logo

The Uplands Coaching logo is deliberately simple, but it carries personal meaning.
At its centre is the sun, representing warmth, light, clarity, and direction. Around it are seven rays.
Each of those seven lines represents not only the sun emitting it's rays but it also represents a member of my immediate family who has served in the Irish Guards. Each one is individual, but all come from the same origin.

The inspiration for this came from my grandfather.

During the First World War, he and his two brothers carved a three-line arrowhead into an apple tree in Lincolnshire before they went off to serve. Only my grandfather returned. His two brothers were killed in action.

Years later, the tree was cut down, but the gardener who worked there carefully removed the section with the carving and returned it to my grandfather. It has since been passed down, and I now have it.
It serves as a quiet reminder of service, sacrifice, and where I come from.

That sense of shared origin, individual paths, and enduring resilience sits at the heart of Uplands Coaching.
